AXA: how far can one idea travel across Africa?

Looking after someone close to you, protecting your family, having someone to rely on: these experiences give an insurance brand a familiar starting point. Turning them into a campaign that resonates across seven countries takes more than a shared message.

With its first pan-African brand campaign, developed with Publicis Conseil, AXA is exploring that ambition. Following its launch in Morocco, the campaign is set to roll out progressively across Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Egypt. Care, mutual support and collective protection sit at the heart of the story.

The approach raises a question that extends beyond insurance: how can a campaign remain recognisable across markets while making room for the differences between them?

Starting with the people we care about

For AXA, the territory makes sense. Caring for others offers a way to discuss protection through human relationships before getting into policies or contractual details. It gives emotional weight to a category whose benefits can feel abstract until the moment someone needs them.

Mutual support can resonate in many settings. The way it works, however, varies between families, generations and economic circumstances. A situation that feels familiar to one audience may carry a different meaning for another.

The idea’s potential therefore lies in its flexibility: providing a shared foundation that each market can interpret through its own experiences and references. The creative challenge is to preserve that openness as the campaign travels.

Giving care a tangible expression

The campaign’s creative treatment draws on physical materials, textures, movement and human imperfections. An original soundtrack, “Sékou’s Story”, accompanies this tactile approach.

These choices give a broad subject something concrete to work with. Care and protection can easily remain general promises; the execution seeks to give them a presence, a rhythm and an emotional register.

For a campaign moving between countries, a distinctive visual treatment can help establish a common identity. Local relevance also depends on the situations depicted, the cultural references and whether people recognise something of their own lives in the story.

The relationship between those two elements will be worth watching as the rollout progresses: a consistent creative world, with enough room for different audiences to find their way into it.

What brands can take from the approach

AXA’s campaign makes a useful case for considering adaptation from the outset. Which elements need to stay consistent to build recognition? Where should local teams have the freedom to make the message more relevant?

A promise, tone or visual language can provide continuity. Stories, languages, formats and channels can offer room for local interpretation. That is a strategic possibility rather than a description of the rollout: the available material does not yet detail the adaptations planned for each country.

Effectiveness will also need to be understood market by market. Message comprehension, association with AXA, trust, consideration and eventual customer enquiries would each reveal something different. A single overall result could conceal significant variations.

For brands operating across several countries, the campaign leaves a practical question: how do you build one recognisable idea while giving each audience a personal reason to connect with it?
