01Data controller

The data controller for this website is:

02The data we process

  • Newsletter: your email address and preferred language (French or English), when you sign up.
  • Display preferences: the theme (light or dark) and the language you choose, stored on your device (see “Cookies and local storage”).
  • Search: the words you type in the search bar are sent to our server to display results. They are not linked to your identity or to any account.
  • Technical data: as with any website, our hosting provider receives the connection data needed to run and secure the service (IP address, browser type, requested pages, date and time).
  • Email exchanges: the content of the messages you send us and your email address.

Brief54 does not use any audience measurement tool, targeted advertising or tracking pixel. We do not collect sensitive data, and the site is not intended to collect data about minors.

03Why we process it

  • Sending you the newsletter. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link included in every email.
  • Remembering your theme and language preferences. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in providing a website that works the way you chose.
  • Running and securing the website and preventing abuse. Legal basis: our legitimate interest.
  • Replying to the messages you send us. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you.

04Who has access to it

Your data is never sold or rented. It is accessible to the Brief54 team and to the following technical providers, who act on our behalf:

  • Mailchimp (Intuit Inc., United States): managing sign-ups and sending the newsletter.
  • Vercel Inc.: hosting the website.
  • Sanity: managing editorial content and powering the site's search engine.
  • Google Fonts (Google LLC, United States): displaying fonts. Your browser contacts Google's servers, which receive your IP address.

05Content from third-party services

Some pages display content hosted by third-party services: images (Sanity, Wikimedia Commons, Unsplash), and videos or posts embedded in articles (for example YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook or Instagram). When this content loads, these services receive your IP address and may set their own cookies, under their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to read.

06Cookies and local storage

Brief54 only sets two first-party cookies, both tied to your preferences:

  • theme: remembers the light or dark theme you chose. Duration: 12 months.
  • lang: remembers the language you chose (French or English), to send you to the right version of the site on your next visits. Duration: 12 months.

The same preferences are also saved in your browser's local storage. They are not used to track you or for advertising, and therefore do not require prior consent. You can delete them at any time from your browser settings: the site will then return to its default settings.

07Transfers outside your country

Some of our providers, including Mailchimp, Google and our hosting provider, process data in the United States or in countries other than yours. These transfers are covered by the contractual safeguards offered by these providers, such as the standard contractual clauses adopted by the European Commission.

08How long we keep it

  • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. Your address may then be kept on a suppression list, solely to make sure you no longer receive our emails.
  • Cookies and preferences: 12 months at most.
  • Connection data: for as long as our hosting provider keeps its logs, for security purposes.
  • Email exchanges: for as long as needed to handle your request.

09Security

The site is served exclusively over HTTPS. Access to administration tools (content management, newsletter) is restricted to authorised people.

10Your rights

You have the following rights over your data at any time:

  • access: find out what data we hold about you;
  • rectification: correct inaccurate data;
  • erasure: ask us to delete your data;
  • objection and restriction: object to processing or ask us to restrict it;
  • portability: receive your data in a readable format;
  • withdrawal of consent: unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.

To exercise these rights, write to us at hello@brief54.com. We will reply within one month.

If you believe your rights are not being respected, you can lodge a complaint with the data protection authority of your country of residence (for example the CNIL in France).

11Changes

We may update this policy to reflect changes to the site or to regulations. The date of the last update is shown at the top of this page.
