How Kuda Is Building Its Brand Around Everyday Nigerian Life

Kuda, the digital banking business offering Nigerians transfers, payments and savings through its app, is putting everyday life at the centre of its new visual identity.

Across photographs and short films produced in Lagos and Abuja, young Nigerians are shown working, running side hustles and enjoying time between commitments.

The direction gives Kuda a more recognisable social world to inhabit. Banking remains the service, but the imagery invites people to see it through the lives their money helps them lead. That positioning is also reflected on Kuda’s website, which pairs its financial products with the promise of getting more from both money and life.

Finding the “Pockets of Sunshine”

Filmmaker Seun Opabisi described spending several weeks across the two cities capturing photographs and vignettes for the rebrand. According to his account, Kuda’s VP of Marketing, Romney Taylor, and Head of Creative, Niyi Okeowo, called the moments they wanted to capture “Pockets of Sunshine”. The material was designed for use in several formats across Kuda’s channels.

The images give that idea a familiar setting: friends taking a photograph together in a car, passengers travelling through the city and a payment made over a table of food. Work and ambition sit alongside leisure, allowing the brand to acknowledge that earning and spending are part of the same life.

As a positioning move, this gives Kuda a visual language it can use repeatedly. Different scenes can tell different stories while reinforcing the same association: a bank that understands the people using it and the things they want to do.

Why this move makes sense

Financial products need clear explanations, but a list of features does not always give someone a reason to feel connected to the company offering them. Kuda’s approach adds that emotional dimension by showing situations its intended audience may recognise.

For a young professional balancing employment, another source of income and a social life, money moves between several priorities. Showing those priorities creates opportunities to explain banking services in context. Savings can relate to a personal goal; payments can appear naturally within a meal or a journey.

The commercial opportunity is to make Kuda easier to remember and more relevant when someone considers where to manage their money. Producing a coordinated collection of photographs and films also gives the team material to sustain that positioning across channels, beyond a single launch.

Its effectiveness will depend on how clearly the connection between the lifestyle imagery and the banking offer comes through.

Turning recognition into regular use

A stronger visual identity can encourage people to take another look, but adoption requires a practical reason to open an account. Continued use then depends on whether the service meets their expectations.

Useful measures would therefore extend from recognition and consideration to account openings and active use. They would help establish whether the rebrand is attracting attention from people who subsequently make Kuda part of their financial routines.

“Pockets of Sunshine” gives the company a human starting point for that relationship. The opportunity is to carry the same understanding of customers’ lives into how its products are explained and experienced.
